three daughter Elinor , Marianne and Margaret with very little money. Here shows
the issue is death. On his deathbed Mr.Dashwood extracts a promise from his son,

Ø The dichotomy between

wrote this novel around the turn of the eighteenth century, on the cusp between
two cultural movements: Classicism and Romanticism. Elinor represents the
characteristics associated with eighteenth century Neo-Clasicism, including
rationality, judgment, moderation and balance. She never loses sight of
propriety and also economic practicalities.
Ø Elinor, though

Ø Sense and sensibility as a realistic novel many
scholars view this connection between the reader and character as a mark of
realism. However, as Austen scholar William Galperian has argued, could not
have participated in nineteenth century realism the realism with which she
later become associated because it had not yet been fully defined. He also
argues Austen’s novel were part of the beginning phase of realism.
Ø On the other side John Wiltshire argues that Austen’s
works many also be distinguished from the realistic tradition in their
treatment of illness and health. Health is an important part of the
characterization of many of Austen’s principal characters.
Ø Apart from exposing the artificiality of some
realistic conventions Marianne articulates a change in the narrative mode which
replaces the monological perspective of the omniscient of the multiple
narration of an epistolary novel.
Ø This change open the way for the exploration of the
characters of sense and sensibility.
vThe Battle of
Realism Elinor and Marianne.
Ø Elinor sense and realism on the other side Marianne
sensibility and she always resignation and acceptance.
Ø As demonstrated by her sister and her mother Elinor is
much more disposed to look at a situation rationally. She thinks about every
decision she is going to make before she acts upon it, and she also hides her
emotions from her family. Marianne symbolizes romance , imagination, and
idealism.Elinor is not only symbolizes sense, but also classicism and she also
representing rationally.she is always very tense and focused on duty and
propriety. She remains busy with her family she also learn about her love her
life is very much normal. She is not studying anything.
Ø While Marianne cries freely throughout the movie and
novel we see Elinor cry only a handful of instances. When Marianne plays, “My
Father ‘s Favorite”, when she believes Marianne is about to die, when she find
out Edward is Unmarried. Elinor reduces that she must stay calm and also
collected for her mother and sister, who are all much more emotional.
Ø Realism not only involves rationality and pragmatism
but it also emphasizes objectivity and the avoidance of subjectivity.
Ø When Marianne asks Elinor how she feels about Edward
she merely responds: and she says that …
“ I can not attempt
to deny that… I think very highly of
him… that I… Greatly steem him……
Ø Marianne is almost opposite of Elinor is every way
Marianne is always different because Marianne sensibility and Elinor sense.
Where Elinor listens to her head and Marianne listens to her heart. Marianne is
often spontaneous, discloses her emotions to everyone and she also studies a
situation subjectively. In the novel Marianne is always seen laughing and
crying.
Ø When she find out Willougbhy is leaving for London,
when he write’s to tell her that he is engaged to Miss Grey when she finds out
that Edward is engaged to lucy.
Ø Marianne subjective attitudes often get her into
trouble in that she is so carefree with Willoughby and so sort with Brandon
that everyone is sure of her regards.
Ø While Mariane’s behavior is seen by many as childish
and rash because Marianne choses to reveal all of her emotion so that she can
share her pain with her mother and sister so she is childish and rash.
Ø Edward shows Elinor and her family kindness and
generosity and Elinor soon falls for him.but when Lucy shows up and tells
Elinor in confidance about her engagement to Edward. Here realistic look on
life clouds her romantic judgment. She falls for Edward, but instead of
revealing her feeling for him, she also studies the situation.
Ø Edward already known Elinor has no money he is
expected to marry well and she feels that she has no chance. In fact, when
Edward comes to visit the Dashwood women Elinor is not only upset about his
engagement to Lucy but fears revealing her feeling for him and Edward is led to
believe that Elinor is actually in love with Brandon she so open and direct
with him. Elinor express and also share her feeling, so Edward misconstrues
them.
Ø Elionr is technically the main character of sense and
sensibility. Elinor exposes her true feelings and Marianne is able to learn to
control her emotion. She selects Brandon to love him as much as Willoughby.
Ø Both girls learn that a combination of romanticism and
realism.
